How we compare

CompareTLD helps you choose a domain extension and a place to register it. This page explains where the numbers come from, how we pick a registrar for each extension and who runs the site.

Prices

For every extension we show the registration (first year), renewal and transfer price from each registrar we track, plus the cost of keeping the name for three years: the first year and two renewals. A low first-year price followed by an expensive renewal is common, so we put the renewal next to it. Prices are checked regularly, are shown in US dollars and may exclude taxes or fees; the registrar's checkout shows the final total.

Our pick

For many extensions we name one registrar as our pick, with a short reason. It is not always the cheapest one. We look at the price over several years, how renewals and transfers work, whether the registrar supports the extension's rules (for example local-presence or trustee services for country domains), privacy options and support. Other registrars are listed below the pick, ordered by their three-year cost, with the lowest first-year and renewal prices marked.

Extension facts

Rules, registration periods, expiry schedules and registry details come from registry documents and other public sources, which we review and update. If something has changed, we would rather show less than guess: when a fact is not confirmed, we leave it out.

Who runs CompareTLD

CompareTLD is connected with two of the registrars in our comparisons: IstanCo (istanco.net) and Irist (irist.com). We show their prices the same way as everyone else's, and our pick names the registrar we would choose ourselves for that extension — sometimes one of them, sometimes not. Some links to registrars and on the Coupons page are affiliate links that can earn us a commission.

WHOIS

The WHOIS tool asks the registry's WHOIS server directly and keeps each result for up to an hour.
