About .tr

Compare allocation and renewal for the same 1 to 5-year period. Renewal is requested within the three months before the term ends, following the registrar's notice; the renewed allocation cannot exceed five years.

TRABIS-accredited registrars handle direct names and category names, with category-specific documents and eligibility conditions. Changing registrar is supported; transferring a name to another party needs a transfer form and documents. Allocation and renewal fees are paid to the registrar.

Rules and registration

Who can register

Applications are made through an accredited registrar with complete and correct applicant information; some categories are allocated only with supporting documents (documented allocation) under the Internet Domain Names Regulation.

Restrictions

Names on the TAKAL list (contrary to legislation, public order, security or morality, all top-level domain names, and .tr second-level names) cannot be allocated. Names on the TAKIL restricted list (for example banks, finance, ministries, city names and public institutions) are restricted to prevent fake domains.

Registration

Registry-registrar model: registrations are made through TRABIS-accredited registrars. Names are registered at the second level (a.tr, for example example.tr) or at the third level under categories such as com.tr, net.tr and org.tr. Second-level a.tr allocation was opened in phases from 2023 by priority category and follows a first come, first served rule. A domain is allocated for at least one and at most five years at a time.

Renewal

The registrar informs the registrant by email at least three months before the end of the allocation period; renewal must be applied for within this three-month period. After renewal the allocation period cannot exceed five years.

Transfers

Domains can be transferred to another party by submitting the transfer form on the registrar's website together with the required documents, and the registrant can change registrar on request. A domain in frozen status cannot be sold, transferred or moved to another registrar, but it can be renewed.

Name rules

Letters a-z, digits 0-9 and hyphens; 2-63 characters; must not start or end with a hyphen; must not have hyphens in the 3rd and 4th positions; must not be allocated to someone else or be on the list of names closed to allocation.

Good to know

Frozen names may be renewed but cannot be sold or moved to another owner or registrar. Turkish letters are not supported; blocked and restricted lists also limit available labels.
