About .ax

Compare the chosen 1, 3 or 5-year period for both the initial registration and renewal. The Government of Åland (Ålands landskapsregering) charges equal registry fees for the two, while each registrar sets its retail price.

Changing registrar uses a code from the existing provider, due within five working days of a valid request. A change of user is completed within five working days after the transfer code and new user details are supplied. Registration is open worldwide.

Rules and registration

Who can register

Between 2 and 10 independent name servers must be configured for each domain and they must be reachable via the internet (regulation M68, section 13).

Restrictions

A domain name must not resemble or infringe another party's protected name or trademark.

Registration

Registration is done through ax registrars, who register the domain in the Government of Åland domain register. The domain must be registered in the name of the actual user, not the registrar. The registry charges registrars a fee per registration and renewal with validity periods of 1, 3 or 5 years. Anyone (legal entities, sole traders, associations and natural persons) may register an ax domain.

Renewal

Renewal is handled by the registrar. The registry charges the same fee for a renewal as for a registration, with validity periods of 1, 3 or 5 years.

Transfers

A change of registrar uses a registrar-change code obtained from the old registrar, which must deliver it within five working days of a valid request. Transfer of a domain to another user is requested through the registrar and executed within five working days after the domain transfer code and the new user's details are provided.

Name rules

Letters a-z, digits 0-9, hyphens and selected national letters such as å, ä, ö (full list in regulation M68); 2-63 characters; must not start or end with a hyphen; must not start with "xn--".

Good to know

Registry fees are equal for new registration and renewal; registrars set retail prices. The namespace is governed by the Act on Electronic Communications Services (FFS 917/2014) and regulation M68.
